A recent Converse advertising campaign featuring Karina, a member of the South Korean K-pop group Aespa, has sparked significant controversy. The promotional image showcased Karina wearing a calf-length white skirt, holding a pair of black high-top Chuck 70 X sneakers under a sharply defined, star-shaped spotlight.
Critics quickly pointed out that the lighting created a silhouette resembling the pointed white hood historically associated with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). Additionally, some viewers interpreted the way the sneakers hung from Karina’s hand as evoking the disturbing imagery of a lynching victim.
In response to the backlash, Converse issued a public apology: “We’re sorry. We understand why this image is deeply upsetting and recognize that we got this wrong.”
The company confirmed it had removed the photograph from all social media platforms and was working to eliminate it wherever it had been distributed. “This should not have happened and we will do better,” Converse stated.
The situation escalated after another image from the same campaign circulated online, with critics sharing both photos side-by-side, arguing that together they reinforced the troubling associations with racist violence.
Louisiana Democrat Rep. Troy Carter demanded transparency from Converse regarding the campaign’s creation and approval process.
“Who created this campaign? Who approved it?
How many executives saw it? Were there any Black people in the room?
If so, did anyone listen to them?” Carter questioned.
He emphasized that a simple apology and removal of the images were insufficient, stating, “The public deserves to know how this happened, who was responsible and what you intend to do about it.”
Converse, a Massachusetts-founded company dating back to the early 1900s, gained widespread fame with its Chuck Taylor sneaker debuting on basketball courts in 1917. The brand has been under Nike’s ownership since 2003.
