- Ed Sheeran apologizes for ‘making mistakes,’ says situation in Gaza is ‘unjustifiable’ (abcnews.com)
Ed Sheeran addressed fans at his Philadelphia concert on Saturday, apologizing for “making mistakes” amid recent controversy surrounding his U.S. tour, and expressing sorrow over the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
The controversy erupted earlier this week when opening act Macklemore was removed from the tour following pro-Palestinian remarks he made during a performance in New Jersey. After this decision, other opening acts also announced their withdrawal from the tour.
Speaking from the stage at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran acknowledged the difficult choices he has faced. “I am making mistakes and I’m so, so sorry,” he said candidly.
Traditionally steering clear of political discussions, Sheeran explained that recent events have placed him in the midst of a deeply complex and passionate debate over freedom of speech and one of the most challenging political conflicts in the world.
Referencing the tragic massacre at Israel’s Nova Music Festival on October 7, 2023, Sheeran said, “What happened in Israel at the Nova Music Festival was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and the loss of civilians’ lives, of children’s lives.”
The controversy began when Macklemore shared a video from his New Jersey show on social media, declaring, “One of the reasons why I wanted to come on this tour was to stand up on stages across America and say two words very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine.” He further emphasized that criticism of Israel’s policies is not criticism of Jewish people.
Following these statements, Sheeran clarified on social media that the decision to remove Macklemore from the lineup was made by the tour’s promoter, not by him personally. He explained that Macklemore’s contract was with the promoter, Messina Touring Group.
Sheeran expressed his distress over the Israel-Palestine conflict and noted that some venues had threatened to cancel upcoming shows if Macklemore remained on the bill.
Messina Touring Group released a statement confirming that several venues would not permit concerts with Macklemore included, which would have led to tour cancellations affecting hundreds of thousands of fans. After discussions, it was decided that Macklemore would no longer perform on the remaining dates.
As the tour continues, Sheeran’s remarks reflect the challenges artists face when navigating political issues amid their performances and public platforms.
