HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Huntsville has lost a quiet soldier of the Civil Rights movement. Martha Hereford died on September 15. She was 91. She would have turned 92 in three weeks.
Hereford stayed home and prayed the morning her son, Sonnie Hereford IV, became the first Black student to integrate an Alabama public school. His father, Alabama’s first licensed Black physician, walked his young son into Huntsville’s Fifth Avenue School.
A nurse by training, Martha Hereford helped her husband establish his medical practice in the 1950s…
