The first sign of crickets inside an Arkansas home is often a sound rather than a sight. After sunset, a steady chirping may seem to come from behind the refrigerator, underneath a cabinet, inside the garage, or somewhere near a bedroom wall. Searching for the source can be surprisingly frustrating because the insect responsible may be only a few feet away, hiding in a dark gap.
The cricket most closely associated with this kind of indoor encounter is the house cricket, Acheta domesticus. Unlike many crickets that primarily remain in fields and vegetation, house crickets are particularly comfortable around buildings and can take advantage of garages, crawl spaces, utility areas, outdoor lights, and sheltered parts of homes.
Arkansas provides plenty of opportunities for this behavior. Hot summers, humid conditions, regular rainfall, wooded neighborhoods, mature landscaping, and changing temperatures in fall can all create favorable conditions for crickets around residential properties.
