CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – As the Lowcountry marks the 37th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo, the memories remain vivid for many who lived through one of South Carolina’s most devastating natural disasters.
The powerful Category 4 storm made landfall near Sullivan’s Island on the night of Sept. 21, 1989, with Hugo’s eye passing over the Charleston area shortly after midnight. It brought significant storm surge to McClellanville and Awendaw, and the storm’s wind carved a path of destruction well inland.
