Did you know that North Carolina is considered one of the most Scottish places in the United States? The Tar Heel State is home to a notable Scottish diaspora population, world-famous Scottish cultural celebrations, and a deep tradition of Celtic music blended into folk and bluegrass. On Saturday, September 26th, a little bit of Scotland is coming to Hillsborough with the Outlandish Hillsborough Scottish Festival. You don’t need Highland ancestors or a kilt hanging in your closet to enjoy the fun – there’s something for everyone! Here’s your definitive guide to making the most of Outlandish 2026.
The big day is on Saturday, but there will be can’t miss events spanning the entire weekend. On Friday Night, we will kick off the festivities with a traditional Ceilidh (kay-lee) event in partnership with Last Fridays & the Art Walk. What is a “Ceilidh” you ask? It’s a Gaelic term for a gathering that includes traditional Celtic dancing and music. The evening begins with bagpiper Andrew Prioli ushering in the celebrations at the Hillsborough Visitors Center, which begin at 5:30 p.m.. There will also be a vendor market and an activity space where you can learn to make a corn husk doll. While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to try some delicious Irn-Bru, Scotland’s most popular (non-alcoholic) beverage. On the courthouse lawn, the Monroe School of Highland Dance and fiddle guru Colin MacLeod will be leading interactive dance and fiddle workshops. These activities are beginner friendly, so don’t be shy about joining in!
Saturday is the main event, taking place at Ayr Mount from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Ayr Mount is the perfect place to celebrate all things Scottish in Hillsborough. The property was named for the town of Ayr, the birthplace of Scotsman-turned-Hillsboroughite William Kirkland. The beautiful historic grounds provide ample space for the day’s activities, which include a vendor market, kids activities, broadsword and Highland athletic demos, and so much more. Don’t forget that kids get in free with an adult ticket, and interactive activities are open to all ages and skill levels. There will also be a full lineup of Celtic inspired music from local bands Bogturtle, Big Celtic Fun, and Nine Times Around.
