KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Beginning Monday, eight businesses and venues in Kalamazoo will be hosting live musical performances from West Michigan artists as a part of Sounds of the Zoo, an annual arts and musical showcase across the city.
“Sounds of the Zoo has always been about more than putting bands on a stage,” Jennifer Hudson-Prenkert, founder and executive director of Sounds in the Zoo, said in a statement. “We’re creating opportunities for people to experience different kinds of music, discover new artists, learn something, participate and connect with each other.”

In its fifth year, Sounds of the Zoo is celebrating its multicultural and cross-genre roots by featuring over 40 West Michigan artists from a variety of artistic traditions, including hip-hop, R&B, traditional Celtic music, improvisational dance set to music and more.
In addition to live music, attendees of Sounds of the Zoo can participate in educational workshops throughout the week, including events on the recording process and networking with music publishers.
“We want people to walk away from Sounds of the Zoo having discovered something,” Hudson-Prenkert stated. “Maybe they discover an artist, a genre, another form of art, a new place in Kalamazoo, or even something about themselves. That’s the change we’re trying to create through music.”
Sounds of the Zoo will take place from Monday to Sunday. Some participating venues include Bell’s Eccentric Cafe, Old Dog Tavern and The Clover Room. On Saturday and Sunday, visitors to Bronson Park can enjoy live Sounds of the Zoo performances from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., respectively…
