After two recent crashes in which children died, Illinois State Police is reminding families that children have to be appropriately secured while in a car.
The reminder comes during Child Passenger Safety Week, which began Sunday.

- Select a car seat that fits your child’s age and size and that can be safely secured in your vehicle.
- Keep children in rear-facing safety seats as long as possible.
- Keep children in the back seat at least through age 12.
- Never place a rear-facing safety seat in front of an active airbag.
- Know the history of your safety seat. A used safety seat may not be safe unless all labels, parts, and instructions are present.
- Always register your safety seat with the manufacturer so you can be notified of recalls. (You also can check for recalls at safercar.gov.)
- Do not use a safety seat that is more than 6 years old or past the expiration date stamped on the seat.
- Do not attach anything to a car safety seat unless the manufacturer allows it. This includes toys, mirrors, window shades, and belt-tightening tools.
- All objects in the vehicle should be stowed in the trunk or tied down. They can become projectiles if a crash or sudden stop occurs.
