The official cause of death for actress Hayden Panettiere has been confirmed.
On Sunday, August 16, the “Remember the Titans” star was found unresponsive in a South Carolina apartment where she was staying temporarily. Emergency responders were called to the scene after reports of cardiac arrest, but despite their efforts, Hayden was pronounced dead at the age of 36.
On Tuesday, September 22, the Greenville County Coroner’s office revealed that Hayden’s death was caused by the toxic effects of multiple substances, including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. The manner of death was ruled accidental. This announcement came shortly after a private memorial service for Hayden was held on September 19, an event notably excluding her estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, and former boyfriend Brian Hickerson.
According to the coroner’s statement, an autopsy conducted by a board-certified forensic pathologist found no signs of trauma that could have contributed to her death.
Prior to the official report, sources told TMZ that Hayden had taken oxycodone laced with fentanyl and that she had obtained several other drugs from a dealer the day before she died.
As rumors circulated regarding the circumstances of her death and potential involvement of Brian Hickerson, Hayden’s representatives issued a statement on September 16 clarifying that the investigation was ongoing. They emphasized that toxicology results were still pending and cautioned against relying on unverified reports from unnamed sources.
“At this time, the investigation is active, and we must allow the process to unfold to find the answers we seek,” the statement read.
At the time of her passing, Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were reportedly with Hayden. Police reports obtained by NBC News reveal that Brian showed officers a bag containing Hayden’s medications. The report also noted that Zach was visibly emotional during the emergency response, while Brian did not show emotion until Hayden was declared deceased.
On August 20, Brian issued a brief statement through his attorney, expressing respect for Hayden’s family and the ongoing investigation. He reaffirmed that police had found no signs of foul play.
Hayden and Brian’s relationship began in 2018 and was marked by turbulence, including multiple domestic violence incidents. Brian was arrested on related charges in 2019 and 2020. In 2021, he pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a partner and was sentenced to 45 days in jail, four years probation, and mandated domestic violence classes.
In her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Hayden detailed the abuse she suffered at Brian’s hands, describing a period where she was so severely beaten she was unable to leave her home for weeks. She explained that her reluctance to report the abuse publicly stemmed from a desire to keep her personal struggles private.
