RIPTA moves forward with plans for new Providence transit center

In late August, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority Board of Directors approved the advancement of the Providence Transit Center project into its next phase, which will involve designing and engineering the space. As part of this effort, RIPTA will shift Providence’s transit hub from Kennedy Plaza to nearby Providence Station.

Throughout the development of the new transit center, RIPTA will prioritize “meeting the needs of passengers and drivers, improving connections, enhancing safety and ensuring that the project is financially responsible,” Christopher Durand, the chief executive officer for RIPTA, said in a press release from the agency.

According to the RIPTA website, the new transit center aims to improve RIPTA rider safety through the use of ample lighting, increased accessibility measures and a reduction in the number of streets pedestrians will need to cross to access the space. Additional amenities will include break areas and restrooms for bus drivers as well as information screens that provide real-time updates for riders…
