Barberton City Schools placed in fiscal emergency with nearly $40M budget deficit

BARBERTON, Ohio (WJW) — Barberton City Schools has been placed in a state of fiscal emergency after the state auditor said the district failed to submit a plan to eliminate nearly $40 million of anticipated budget shortfalls over the next three years.

In a media release, state officials said that in May the district was placed in fiscal watch. At the time, FOX 8 reported that a school levy failed with 64.6% of voters against it.

According to state law, a district placed in fiscal watch has 120 days to submit a plan to address the anticipated deficits, which in this case the auditor said include $5.1 million, $12 million, and $21 million in fiscal years 2027, 2028, and 2029, respectively…
