RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond is still more than $32 million in the red in unpaid real estate taxes and months behind on its initial promise to resume a process that would help it recoup some of those funds. Ithasn’t used any process since 2023.
Per a July financial report, Richmond is owed just over $32 million in delinquent real estate taxes. The most recent data from the city shows that more than $24 million of this amount — associated with more than 7,200 properties — has been unpaid for six months or more.
Some unpaid bills date back to as early as 2006 — and because of the 20-year statute of limitations on this type of debt, those taxes will soon become uncollectible if not addressed, as well as decades of interest and late fees…
