OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Omaha is considering a proposal to reduce required parking spaces for new housing, an effort aimed at making it cheaper and easier to build homes.
City rules currently require builders to include a set number of parking spaces, typically 1.5 to 2 per unit, for every home, duplex or apartment. The proposal, which came before Omaha City Council for the first time Tuesday, would drop that requirement to one space per unit across the board.
What the proposal changes
Under the proposal, builders would only need to provide one parking space for new single-family housing and new townhouses. Two spaces are currently required.
