KANSAS CITY, Mo. – As the Kansas City Royals prepare to move from their long-time home at the Truman Sports Complex to a new downtown stadium, the team has just chosen three firms – two with Kansas City roots – to construct the $3 billion stadium and mixed-use development.
Both Mortenson and McCownGordon, founded in Kansas City, will work in a joint venture and serve as construction manager at risk for the 1.25-million-square-foot stadium, while JE Dunn, also founded in Kansas City, will partner to help create the live-work-play neighborhood across the broader 85-acre district, which is set to be the largest sports-anchored downtown development in baseball. The team said the companies are uniquely qualified to build a successful and timeless ballpark.
The architecture firm Populous – which designed the Kansas City Royals’ historic Kauffman Stadium that opened in 1973 – is leading the design for the team’s new ballpark. The stadium’s capacity will total nearly 35,000 fixed seats with space for 3,500 standing-room spots…
