CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The City of Charleston gave an update on the Maybank Highway improvement project on Tuesday, addressing a bottleneck that slows the flow of traffic on Johns Island.
According to city officials, Charleston County originally proposed widening a portion of the road to four lanes near the Stono River Bridge, which was ultimately rejected due to the number of grand trees that would have been cut down.
The project was revived after Mayor William Cogswell proposed reducing the width of the lanes from 12 to 11 feet and narrowing the medians, allowing more space for trees, according to officials. This proposal requires nine grand live oaks to be removed, down from 21…
