CHICAGO (WGN) — Musician Kanye West was in attendance Tuesday as his late mother was honored with a street naming ceremony on Chicago’s South Side.
The ceremony was held by 7th Ward Alderman Greg Mitchell on Tuesday at the corner of 78th Street and South Shore Drive. Dr. Donda West was a professor and chair of the English Department at Chicago State University, where she established the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing.
The intersection will now be dedicated in Dr. West’s name, and her decades-long contributions to education, literature and culture in Chicago.
Kanye, also known as “Ye,” was in attendance Tuesday, but did not address the media. At the end of the ceremony, he held up the presented street sign with his mother’s name.
