Dozens of students at Cahokia High School staged a walkout Tuesday afternoon in hopes of preventing a strike – a move they say would affect their education and future.
Cahokia Federation of Teachers Local 1272 leaders confirmed a strike will begin Friday if the union and district have not reached a contract agreement. The announcement comes after a year of contentious contract negotiations.
In a letter to families, the school board said schools would close and extracurricular activities, including athletics, would cease if there is a strike. In an attempt to prevent that, a group of students left during lunch Tuesday. Some carried signs with messages such as “we have a voice too” and “we love our teachers.”…
