School board faces pushback over proposed program changes at E.E. Miller

Major changes could soon reshape Cumberland County’s school choice program, as district leaders consider a sweeping proposal that would add new technology and health science pathways while ending the Spanish immersion program at E.E. Miller Elementary School.

Student and Parent Concerns

The proposed changes have already sparked concern among parents and students, many of whom are asking the district to reconsider its plans.

“Please do not take away the Spanish immersion program because it’s so important for my friends and for me,” said Thiago Adorno, a seven-year-old E.E. Miller Elementary student from Puerto Rico who has participated in the program since kindergarten.

His mother, Roselyn Adorno, echoed his worries. “If you speak two or more language, you have more opportunities for jobs,” she said. “Mi mayor preocupación y su rendimiento escolar because he has a great performance and I don’t know how that would affect him academically.”
