Jacksonville connection helps crack 40-year mystery with possible ties to Tylenol murders

BOISE, Idaho – For nearly 40 years, two of America’s most haunting unsolved mysteries ran on separate tracks. One was a man with no name who died in a Boise church. The other was a faceless killer who terrorized the nation by lacing Tylenol capsules with cyanide.

On Wednesday, Ada County Sheriff’s Office officials announced those two tracks may have always been the same road.

The man known as the “Unknown Wanderer” — who died of cyanide poisoning inside Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boise on Dec. 4, 1982 — has been identified as Dr. Mathew Francis Betkouski, an organic chemist with a documented history of mental illness, a deep fascination with cyanide and a trail that connects Jacksonville, Florida, to the Chicago suburbs where seven people died after taking poisoned Tylenol capsules just weeks before Betkouski turned up dead in Idaho…
