Man gets 240 days in jail for setting St. Paul’s fire

A man who started an April 27 fire in a dorm room at St. Paul’s Community Center that shut down its homeless shelter for more than four months received 280 days in jail Wednesday morning.

The action to which Edward Belcher, 37, admitted did not warrant the “irreparable damage” that prison time inflicts on inmates, but a period of confinement is still appropriate, Judge Gary Cook said in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

While fire damage was confined to the dorm room in which Belcher then resided, smoke caused damage to several neighboring rooms and to St. Paul’s common area…
