ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Rockford City Council approved a wide range of measures Monday, Sept. 21, including plans to sunset a longstanding tax increment financing (TIF) district, designate a historic North Main Street property as a landmark, and move forward with infrastructure, public safety and community development projects across the city.
Among the most significant actions, aldermen approved ending the Springfield Corners Tax Increment Financing District at the end of 2026. City officials said the district has reached the end of its intended lifespan. Once the TIF district expires, future property tax growth generated within the area will no longer be captured by the district and will instead flow to local taxing bodies.
The council also approved landmark status for the Otis Eddy Homestead, located at 2520 N. Main St. The Historic Preservation Commission recommended the designation, citing the property’s architectural significance, its connection to early Rockford businessman and community leader Otis Eddy, and its historical role as a gathering place in the community…
