San Antonio is about to get a second “diverging diamond” interchange, with the Texas Department of Transportation breaking ground Thursday on a $40 million project to revamp the crossing of Interstate 37 and SE Military Drive, near the Brooks community.
When the project is finished, the opposing lanes of SE Military will switch places where they pass under I-37 — the eastbound lanes flipped to the north side, the westbound lanes to the south side — forming a braided shape. The project is expected to be completed in 2029.
The revamped crossing will be similar to the new interchange between Blanco Road and Loop 1604 on the North Side, which became San Antonio’s first diverging diamond when TxDOT completed work on it last month.
