1837 — Arkansas territorial official dies. Meriwether Lewis Randolph, grandson of Thomas Jefferson and Arkansas’s final territorial secretary, died of malaria September 24, 1837, after traveling by dugout canoe to Ecore Fabre, present-day Camden, in Ouachita County, for supplies.
