Corie Walsh, 40, an Illinois mother facing charges in the death of her 2-year-old son Barrett, pleaded not guilty during a preliminary court hearing Thursday. Present at the hearing was her husband, Michael Walsh, whom she is also accused of attempting to poison.
According to allegations, Walsh strangled her young son and left him hanging from a rafter before attempting to take her own life on September 1, reportedly during a “psychotic episode.”
Walsh’s attorney, Andrea Lyon, stated after the hearing that the family remains supportive, emphasizing that violence is uncharacteristic of Walsh. “They love her, and this is not – she’s never been violent. … She was psychotic,” Lyon explained, adding that her clients want Walsh to receive proper care and recovery.
Prosecutors have linked Walsh’s case to an apparent fixation on the high-profile Lindsay Clancy trial, asserting that Walsh not only killed her son but also plotted to poison her husband.
Lyon, who previously defended Casey Anthony, revealed that her legal team has subpoenaed treatment records from the facility where Walsh is currently held. They are advocating for Walsh’s release into a hospital setting for psychiatric treatment. However, a judge earlier denied her release, citing concerns that she posed a danger to her husband and their three surviving children.
At Thursday’s hearing, Lyon noted the presence of Walsh’s husband, mother, and her mother’s close friend. “Ms.
Walsh entered a plea of not guilty. The defense continues to seek her release so she can receive appropriate psychiatric treatment,” Lyon said, declining further comment.
