SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – On this edition of Throwback Thursday, Lori Kent with the Local Lou Podcast tells us about the historical connection between divorce and the state of South Dakota.
“We’re going to talk about kind of a hidden piece of Sioux Falls history. It’s kind of a dirty little secret. Kind of a fun one. So, nestled between our old courthouse museum and the new courthouse building is a historical marker that talks about when Sioux Falls was the divorce capital of the nation,” said Kent.
“In the late 1870s until about 1909, the state of South Dakota was a really great place to get divorced. At the time, divorce was pretty few and far between, and actually illegal in a lot of states. Women had a very hard time leaving a marriage, even if there was abuse involved.”…
