In the 1960s, Dusty Springfield experienced a major career revival in the United States, highlighted by one of her most celebrated albums and a standout track about youthful romance.
“Son of a Preacher Man,” penned by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins, tells the story of a young woman captivated by the charming son of a local preacher, Billy, who teaches her about love. Springfield recorded the song in her late 20s, including it on her critically acclaimed album Dusty in Memphis. The single climbed to No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart, also enjoying success across Europe.
Interestingly, the song was originally intended for Aretha Franklin. According to reports, Franklin declined the track, feeling it was disrespectful.
Ronnie Wilkins recounted that the idea for the song came during an Aretha Franklin session, when Atlantic Records executive Jerry Wexler encouraged Hurley and Wilkins to write for Franklin. Drawing on their shared experiences as children of preachers, the duo quickly wrote “Son of a Preacher Man” within about 30 to 45 minutes.
Though Wexler admired the song, he decided it didn’t quite suit Franklin’s style. Since he was already working with Springfield on Dusty in Memphis, he suggested the track be given to her instead.
Franklin did eventually record her own version a year later for her album This Girl’s in Love with You, and her sister Erma also covered the song. Over time, “Son of a Preacher Man” has been covered by various artists and earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s list of the “Greatest Songs of All Time.”
The song experienced a cultural resurgence when it was featured in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 film Pulp Fiction. Its inclusion boosted album sales dramatically, and Tarantino himself has said he would not have filmed the iconic scene without securing the rights to the track. Dusty Springfield’s soulful hit continues to resonate as a timeless classic decades after its release.
