A driver struck and killed a man near Richmond High School on Thursday, according to a media report.
Richmond police responded to reports of a crash just before 6:30 a.m. near Maricopa Avenue and 23rd Street, according to KRON4. When officers arrived, they found a man with severe trauma from a collision with a car. He was later pronounced dead on the scene. A family member identified the victim as 65-year-old Douglas Vargas, according to KRON4. Vargas was a San Francisco native who retired from his practice as a dentist in Daly City. Family said he lived on the street where he was killed for about 20 years. Vargas was most likely collecting aluminum cans when he was hit, Vargas’ nephew told reporters.
