For nearly eight years, Painter’s Folly sat as one of Chadds Ford Township’s most treasured possessions, a 19th-century mansion purchased with public open space funds and safeguarded as a piece of local history too important to lose.
This October, that chapter closes. The Italianate estate at 1421 Baltimore Pike goes to auction on Thursday, October 22, putting the future of one of the Brandywine Valley’s most storied properties back in private hands.
A Cornerstone of American Illustration
The house has earned its place in American art history several times over. Built around 1857 by farmer Samuel Painter, the three-story mansion later became the summer home and teaching studio of Howard Pyle, the illustrator credited with founding American magazine illustration and training a generation of artists who would define it.
Pyle ran his Chadds Ford summer school from the property between 1898 and 1903, drawing students who became legends in their own right, including N.C. Wyeth.
