Nebraska has nearly doubled the number of weather stations it uses to monitor critical climate and extreme weather data around the state. These stations, called mesonets, had their funding threatened in 2022, and the state was only able to maintain 55 mesonets over Nebraska’s 77,000 square miles.
Thanks to an increase in funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers this year, the state now boasts 104 stations. Mesonets are made possible by a combination of public and private funding, including the University of Nebraska system.
