Staff Sgt. Lamar Riddick was working at West Virginia University when his boss found an opening that seemed made for him: The U.S. Army Field Band was seeking a hip-hop artist. Riddick’s passion for rap was well known at the university. His boss, a classical pianist, encouraged him to apply and rehearsed with him for an audition that included singing. More than 150 people applied, Riddick said. Eight reached the in-person auditions, and the Field Band selected two.
Now the Field Band’s first hip-hop artist, Riddick will perform in Manassas on Sunday, September 27, as part of its 80th Anniversary Concert at the Hylton Performing Arts Center.
