LUBBOCK, Texas — Karrie Merritt, 50, was arrested Friday and charged with 2nd-degree Manslaughter stemming from a January 2025 crash that killed a 64-year-old woman near the 5800 block of East County Road 6300 and Highway 62/82.
EverythingLubbock previously reported that DPS officials said 64-year-old Virginia Castano-Marquez was parked on the eastbound shoulder of U.S. 62/82. While she was parked, a stolen vehicle, hauling a stolen trailer driven by Merritt, was traveling east on U.S. 62/82 and collided with Marquez.
Additional court documents obtained by EverythingLubbock indicated that DPS officials determined that Merritt failed to drive in a single lane and failed to control her speed, striking Marquez’s vehicle while traveling at approximately 95 mph at the point of impact. Officials say the speed limit on the roadway where the crash occurred was 75 mph.
