After spending this budget season looking for items to cut, Bexar County Commissioners Court decided the county’s problem with stray and roaming dogs is worth investing millions to address.
The county is building a new $12 million animal care facility on the Southwest Side. The 17,000-square-foot building will include 132 kennels, more than double the size of the county’s 60-kennel facility in Kirby, which is chronically overcrowded.
The county said it took in more than 800 animals last year and could house over 1,000 animals this year, including strays, animals seized in cruelty cases and pets surrendered by their owners…
