EUGENE, Ore. – Eugene police arrested a man after he repeatedly crashed his car into a bank building on Willamette Street, according to the Eugene Police Department.
EPD officials said that officers were called to US Bank at 800 Willamette Street around 10 a.m. on Sept. 24 after reports that a Subaru was running into the building. The driver left the area on foot before police arrived. When officers got to the scene, they found the Subaru parked near the front entrance of the bank. The cinder block siding of the building had a large hole in it, and rubble and debris were scattered on the sidewalk. The Subaru had heavy front-end damage with the front bumper and grill hanging down, and branches from bushes were stuck in the rear bumper.
A witness told officers the driver was inside a nearby restaurant. Officers found the driver, identified as 29-year-old Desta Jahniwind Ellsworth of Eugene, sitting in a booth. He was sweating heavily and talking very quickly when he told the officer his accelerator got stuck. When asked if he reversed the car after hitting the building, Ellsworth admitted to doing so but said the accelerator got stuck again.
