The true measure of friendship often reveals itself in moments of hardship, and Reba McEntire’s bond with Dolly Parton is a profound example. Though McEntire never learned the reason behind Parton’s final phone call, she remains certain of the deep care behind it.
Their friendship was tested by tragedy in 1991, when a plane crash claimed the lives of eight members of McEntire’s band after a concert in San Diego. The devastating loss left McEntire grappling with how to continue her career.
In that dark time, Dolly Parton extended remarkable kindness, offering her own band to support McEntire. “Dolly Parton said, ‘Here, take my band,’” McEntire recalled, emphasizing that the gesture went far beyond just the music-it was a lifeline of reassurance during a period of broken hearts.
Parton’s generosity was instrumental in helping McEntire move forward. The singer channeled her grief into the poignant 1991 album For My Broken Heart, a tribute to those she lost.
Over the years, the two country legends maintained a close relationship. Dolly Parton made a guest appearance on McEntire’s 2005 sitcom Reba, and they collaborated on the track “Does He Love You” for McEntire’s 2021 album Revived Remixed Revisited.
In late July, Parton placed a call to McEntire, who was in a meeting and missed it. Attempts to reconnect were unsuccessful, and sadly, Parton passed away at age 80 on August 25.
Reflecting on the missed call, McEntire told Entertainment Tonight, “I’ll never know why she called me… I’ll find out one day,” capturing the bittersweet uncertainty of their final contact.
Following Parton’s death, McEntire paid an emotional tribute, expressing gratitude for all the remarkable things Parton had done and affirming she would “always love” her.
