Gabby Petito’s parents believe their daughter’s spirit played a role in ensuring her body was found after she was tragically killed during a cross-country trip.
Gabby, a 22-year-old aspiring YouTube star, was murdered by her partner, Brian Laundrie, who then disappeared into the Wyoming wilderness. Her remains were discovered on September 19, 2021, weeks after she was strangled to death in Bridger-Teton National Forest. The breakthrough came when social media users and fellow travelers identified the couple’s white Ford Transit van through dashcam footage and online tips, guiding investigators to the campsite.
Reflecting on the intense public interest in the case, Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, shared in an interview with The Mirror US that she feels her daughter’s spirit helped bring attention to the case and made sure justice was served. “This story took off on a level that even the FBI told us they’ve never seen anything like this,” Nichole said. “I do believe that was Gabby, making sure her face was out there, that she was found, and that Brian didn’t get away with this.”
The widespread social media attention was crucial in locating Gabby’s body, providing some closure to her family. Speaking ahead of their upcoming appearance at CrimeCon, Nichole and stepfather Jim Schmidt opened up about Gabby’s vibrant personality beyond the headlines.
“She was just a light on this earth,” Nichole recalled fondly. “She brought so much joy to many lives.
I was only 20 when I had her, and though I wasn’t sure what to expect as a young mom, I wouldn’t change a thing. She was full of energy, and I had all the energy to keep up with her.”
Jim, who became Gabby’s stepfather when she was two and a half, also shared touching memories. “I remember teaching her to ride a two-wheel bike.
As soon as I let go, she was ready to go, explore, and travel,” he said. “She was amazing.
I was already in love with Nichole, but I fell even more in love after seeing what an incredible mom she was.”
