STARS OF THE NIGHT
Luke Bocanegra was a major part of the Memorial offensive game plan with 12 carries for 126 yards and all three Panther touchdowns. Junah Roberts also carved out success on the ground with 105 yards to help Memorial generate a 259-yard performance.
Amarillo High’s Sy Richardson torched the Memorial defense with nearly 300 yards from scrimmage. The Sandies pulled the first-string backfield early and let Richardson handle the bulk of the carries on Friday.
TURNING POINT
After falling down 14-0 early in the first quarter, the Memorial sideline still had a bit of optimism left. After all, a two-score game isn’t much to overcome with 3½ quarters left. However, when quarterback Trevor Lewis threw a backward pass that was batted down and ruled a fumble recovered by the defense, the air seemed to completely left the Panthers’ sails.
KEY STATISTICS
- The 38-point loss is Memorial’s largest deficit of its inaugural season
- Despite both teams trusting the ground game, home run plays were aplenty, with Bocanegra turning in a 53-yard rush for the Panthers and both Swain and Richardson registering rushes of at least 60 yards for the Sandies.
- Only one touchdown pass was thrown Friday when Amarillo High’s Hunter Randles found his tight end, Caden Virden, on a jump pass from the 5-yard-line.
