ST. LOUIS – Sounds of train horns are increasing across St. Louis, and many residents say they’re frustrated by the noise disrupting their sleep at night.
The reason behind it? The City of St. Louis recently lost its designation from the Federal Railroad Administration as a “quiet zone.” A quiet zone is an area where trains generally aren’t required to blow their horns when approaching railroad crossings, as long as other federal safety requirements are met.
Holly Roberts, a St. Louis Mayor’s Office spokesperson, tells FOX 2 that city officials were made aware of the FRA’s decision to remove St. Louis’ quiet zone designation on Sept. 10, 2026, via email. That’s apparently when the mayor’s administration first became aware of that decision…
