A 22-year-old Indiana man has survived an extraordinary and life-threatening injury after a severe car accident left his skull detached from his spine-a condition known as internal decapitation, which medical experts say is almost always fatal.
Brock Meister was involved in a crash on an icy road in January 2018 when his vehicle skidded into a ditch and rolled onto its side. The violent impact caused his head to strike the car window, resulting in the rare and devastating injury.
Remarkably, his friends acted quickly at the scene: one dragged him back into the car, while another, Ryan Topper, arrived behind them, prevented Brock from moving, and called 911. Brock repeatedly expressed pain in his neck and asked for an ambulance.
At Doctors Memorial Hospital in South Bend, physicians were stunned to identify the internal decapitation via X-ray. Neurosurgeon Dr. Kashif Shaikh recalled having to double-check the scans due to the injury’s rarity and the fact that survival is exceedingly uncommon.
Brock’s condition was complicated further by breathing difficulties, requiring a tracheotomy. Once specialized surgeons and equipment arrived, an emergency surgery was performed to realign and secure his head and neck using plates, rods, and screws. Interestingly, one of the surgeons had previously treated Brock for a brain tumor he had as a teenager.
After several weeks in the hospital and continued recovery at home, Brock faces some lasting challenges, including limited use of his right arm and lower body pain. Nonetheless, doctors are optimistic that he will lead a nearly normal life.
Reflecting on his ordeal, Brock said, “I have fought for my life this time around, and some days I feel like I still am. It was kind of scary at first, but I have more movement than I thought I would, so that’s good. I’m just thankful to be here, so that’s all that matters.”
His mother, Jenna Meister, expressed profound gratitude, acknowledging the near-tragic outcome that was averted. “As a mom, I truly know God was there that night and saved my child.
Things easily could have been more tragic. Our boy is a miracle.”
Dr. Shaikh remains hopeful about Brock’s ongoing recovery: “It will take some time for the body to heal, and that can be frustrating and painful.
But he is young, has a great attitude, and looks better each time I see him. I continue to be very optimistic.”
Brock has since shared his renewed outlook on life, emphasizing the importance of cherishing each day after surviving what many would consider an impossible injury.
