Maryland’s $41.9 million question
Maryland’s health watchdog identified $41.9 million for recovery after 1,422 audits and investigations from fiscal 2023 through 2025. That finding matters now because taxpayers could not routinely see the underlying reports.
A September 2026 legislative audit pushed the agency toward fuller disclosure. The money involves Medicaid cases, health providers, and local departments across the state.

A first audit after independence
State auditors reviewed the Office of the Inspector General for Health from July 1, 2022, through April 30, 2026. It was the first evaluation since the office became independent.
The watchdog audits local health departments and certain private providers receiving state health grants. It also investigates suspected fraud, waste, and abuse involving Maryland health funds.
