AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – The Ohio Department of Transportation announced a major milestone in the State Route 8 Bridge Replacement project.

On Sunday, two sections of the bridge, located over the Cuyahoga River Valley in Akron, were demolished using controlled explosives.
At the time, both north and southbound lanes were closed in the area, as well as several local streets within a 1,000 feet safety perimeter, said ODOT.
The overall $158 million project will replace the hi-level bridge with two, new bridges – one to carry northbound traffic, the other to carry southbound traffic.

The southbound bridge opened to traffic in December 2025. The new northbound bridge is expected to open by fall 2028, said ODOT.
