LUBBOCK, TX (KLBK) – KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley has your Tuesday evening weather update for September 29, 2026.
Weather Aware Days remain in effect for both Tuesday and Wednesday, September 29 & 30, 2026 across the 30-County KLBK Forecast Area due to the potential of flash flooding and isolated severe thunderstorms.
ACTIVE ALERTS:
Areal Flood Watches have been issued for the following counties in eastern New Mexico: Curry, Roosevelt and Lea. This WATCH remains in effect through 6 AM MDT Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The following counties in western Texas are also included under an Areal Flood Watch: Parmer, Castro, Swisher, Bailey, Lamb and Cochran, Hockley, Yoakum, Terry, Lynn, Hale and Lubbock. This WATCH remains in effect until 1 PM CDT Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The counties of Gaines, Dawson, Borden and Scurry also remain under an Areal Flood Watch until 7 AM CDT Wednesday, September 30, 2026.vRainfall totals of 1-3″ are expected for most locations, with isolated totals as high as 4-5″ not out of the question. Be sure to avoid flooded areas and always remember to Turn Around Don’t Drown!
A Level 3/4 Moderate Risk of flash flooding conditions remains in place for areas along and west of Highway 385 this evening through the early morning hours of our Wednesday. Here, we have the highest potential of seeing 1-3″ through Wednesday morning, with isolated +4″ totals! The further east you go, the less likely flash flooding is to occur. Heavy rainfall will return around 7 PM CDT over western areas, and eventually exit eastern locations by 10 AM CDT Wednesday! Avoid flooded areas, and remember to Turn Around Don’t Drown!
In addition to the flash flooding potential, there is also a low-end severe weather potential with this storm system. A Level 1/5 Marginal Risk for severe storms has been issued for areas on the Caprock. Isolated severe storms capable of 60-70 MPH wind gusts and isolated tornadoes will be a possibility. This risk will linger overnight tonight into the early morning hours of Wednesday, Make sure to have multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts through the overnight hours should any be issued for your location. Severe storms will be most likely from 5 PM CDT through 3 AM CDT.
