HONOLULU (KHON2) — A data breach from 2019 is still making waves for Hawaiʻi patients whose personal information was exposed. Labcorp has now reached a multistate settlement that includes new rules for how it protects data handled by outside vendors.
The Hawaiʻi Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Office of Consumer Protection joined 43 other attorneys general in the settlement with Laboratory Corporation of America, known as Labcorp.

The case involved a breach at Labcorp’s debt collector, Retrieval Masters Creditors Bureau, doing business as American Medical Collection Agency (AMCA).
“People in Hawaiʻi should feel confident their personal and health information is protected,” aid Mana Moriarty, executive director of the Office of Consumer Protection. “This settlement makes clear that HIPAA-covered organizations can’t pass the buck to their vendor when it comes to HIPAA compliance.”…
