‘Gut punch’ ruling may force family to give up lakeside cottage. Will they keep fighting?

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — A ruling this month has gone against the wishes of a family that wants to keep their lakeside cottage on the shores of Gourdneck Lake.

It felt like a “gut punch” when the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled on Friday, Sept. 11, that Kalamazoo County has the right to force the family to sell its cabin at 1739 East U Ave. to the government, owner Larry McClish said.

Kalamazoo County filed a lawsuit in 2022 seeking to use eminent domain to force the owners of the lakeside cottage to sell the property to the county. The county wants to absorb the property into a park that surrounds it on three sides…
