Areas of rain, heavy rain expected through the day on Wednesday

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Polo is moving into Nebraska, bringing the potential for heavy rain and localized flooding through Thursday. The 10/11 Weather team is tracking multiple rounds of rain that could impact your commute, travel plans, and outdoor activities.

Official Watches in Effect

Flood Watches remain in place across the area through 7 p.m. Thursday. Due to a southward trend in the heaviest potential rainfall, some northern and northeastern Nebraska counties have been removed from the watch early. Even with the southward trend, rainfall amounts between 1″ and 4″ will be possible across the area, with some localized amounts in southeastern Nebraska up to 6″ possible.

Dense Fog Advisories are in effect for parts of central and northeastern Nebraska through the mid to late morning hours Wednesday. Visibility could drop to a quarter mile or less in low-lying areas and river valleys.

What to Expect

Wednesday through Thursday morning will be the critical window for heavy rain. Expect a broad swath of 1 to 4 inches of rain across the region, with the heaviest rainfall expected south and southeast of Lincoln, particularly in areas near Falls City and Nebraska City.

Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected:

  • Overnight Wednesday into early morning: Scattered showers with pockets of moderate to heavy rain will be possible in southeastern Nebraska into very early Wednesday morning.
  • Wednesday morning: A brief break in rain is possible around 8 a.m. before the next round moves in around 11 a.m., with rain becoming more widespread late Wednesday morning into and through the afternoon hours.
  • Wednesday night into Thursday morning: The heaviest rain is expected during this window. This round, combined with already saturated ground from previous rain, will likely result in significant runoff into local rivers and creeks.

Rain should taper off Thursday afternoon and clear out by evening.

Flooding Concerns

Flash flooding is the immediate concern overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning. Rivers and creeks, including the Little Blue River, Big Blue River, Turkey Creek, and Big Nemaha River, will likely experience flooding through Thursday, possibly lingering into Friday.

If you live near rivers or creeks, monitor water levels closely and be prepared to move to higher ground if necessary.…
