As Millennium Hotel comes down, St. Louis weighs a bolder vision for downtown highways

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Cranes are tearing down the Millennium Hotel in downtown St. Louis, part of an almost $700 million redevelopment project. People traveling on Interstate 44 or sitting in Busch Stadium can see the demolition underway.

Those involved in the project said the tower stood for more than a decade as a symbol of problems in St. Louis. Project leaders call its demolition visible proof of a turnaround.

Leaders are also looking at a larger project: capping more of the interstate trench near the Gateway Arch and addressing the aging Interstate 64 double-decker highway that has separated downtown from the riverfront.
