A Milwaukee man is the subject of an active arrest warrant after police say a dispute over a PlayStation ended in a deadly shooting on Sept. 4. Authorities have charged the suspect with reckless homicide, and the case has raised immediate concerns because children were present in the home when the attack occurred.
How police say the shooting unfolded
Milwaukee police responded to a residence on West Keefe Avenue after reports of gunfire and found several children on the front porch in distress. Officers located the victim on the second floor of the house; emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene.
Detectives recovered multiple spent 9 mm shell casings throughout the residence, including two near the victim’s body. The medical examiner later determined the fatal victim had been struck by four bullets — wounds to the left arm, chest and twice in the back.
Victim and suspect
The man who died has been identified as Marris Virgil, 37. Police have named 21-year-old Darrius S. Shelton as the suspect. Shelton is accused of reckless homicide and is not in custody; authorities say a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Accounts from witnesses
Investigators say the victim’s long-term partner told them she arrived at the house shortly before the shooting and found her 10- and 11-year-old sons playing video games with a cousin — the cousin is named in court records as the defendant.
According to the partner’s account in a probable cause statement, an argument began over who owned the PlayStation. Tensions escalated and the two men stood chest-to-chest before the shots were fired. The partner said she briefly looked away, then heard the gunfire and turned to see the suspect holding a firearm. She also told police the suspect pointed the weapon at her and threatened to shoot.
A separate witness told detectives the console had originally been bought by the victim but stopped working; the defendant had reportedly paid to repair it, which later sparked the ownership dispute. The victim’s partner said she offered $260 to settle the matter, but that offer was declined.
