Tricky @ The Commonwealth Room 10/2
Bristol, England-born Adrian Thaws—better known as Tricky—debuted on record with 1995’s Maxinquaye. The record was a groundbreaking effort in the trip-hop style, an inventive hybrid of hypnotic electronica, reggae, alt-rock and hip-hop. Bristol would be ground central for the new musical form, and along with Massive Attack, Portishead and DJ Shadow, Tricky quickly became one of its leading lights. A prolific artist, Tricky has released 18 albums to date; 2026’s Different When It’s Silent is his latest. His commercial success has been most notable in his native U.K., where he has earned a Gold and Silver record, and placed 12 of his albums on the charts. But Tricky has made inroads into the U.S. market as well, charting at least a half dozen times. His releases also chart reliably in at least nine other countries across Europe and beyond. Tricky has produced and/or collaborated with a wide variety of artists including Angelique Kidjo, Björk, Elvis Costello, Notorious B.I.G., Garbage and many others. With opener Marta Zlakowska, Tricky comes to The Commonwealth Room on Friday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. Tickets for this 21+ show are $40 and available from axs.com. (Bill Kopp)
Breakaway Festival @ America First Field 10/2 & 10/3
Breakaway, the massive, multi-city electronic dance music (EDM) festival is coming to Salt Lake City this weekend. The tour has spanned 13 U.S. locations from March through November 2026, so it’s a pretty big deal that our city is on the list this year. For two days, you can dance outdoors at the America First Field in Sandy to your favorite house, bass, dubstep and future bass artists. Salt Lake’s lineup includes powerhouse legends like Tiësto and Kaskade who are still going strong. Kaskade—who got his major start as a DJ and producer in Salt Lake City—just released the single “Satisfy You,” with Bobby Harvey and Sam Harper this month. Headliners also include some big current names like John Summit, Chris Lake and special debuts, Gordon City and MPH. Based on how the festival looks in other cities, one can expect large-scale festival production, massive LED screens, laser rigs and heavy bass music with a community-driven, local feel. It will also feature multiple stages, silent discos and local food trucks. Local house producers like Branden Estrada and OBAŸASHI are also on this lineup, so go early to support our hometown artists. This 18+ event runs 3 – 11 p.m. Tickets cost $128.99 for Friday GA or $115 for Saturday GA. Two-day passes and VIP packages (with premium viewing areas like the “Space Deck”) are also available. Go to universe.com to purchase tickets. (Arica Roberts)
