Cold case remains unsolved nearly 40 years after remains found in Portage County field

PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO)— This week marks nearly 40 years since a farmer found a man dead in a Portage County field. Detectives have since identified him but still do not know who killed him.

A farmer clearing a field off Cable Line Road in Paris Township found human remains in a shallow grave on Sept. 28, 1988. The coroner ruled the man died of blunt force trauma to the head. No weapon was found.

Without an ID or a match to a missing persons report, the man remained a John Doe for decades…
