Mayor Proposes 3.5% Levy Increase; Officials Project a 2.5% Rise in Tax Bills

Officials project East Providence residents’ tax bills would rise about 2.5%, with the rate going from $13.35 to $13.68 per $1,000 of assessed value, though they said the figures are estimates until assessments and business filings are final.

East Providence, R.I. — Mayor Roberto DaSilva’s proposed budget would raise East Providence’s tax levy by 3.5%, which administration officials said should translate into about a 2.5% increase in residents’ tax bills, according to the East Providence City Council’s published meeting recording of Tuesday night’s budget hearing.

The levy is the total amount the city collects from property taxpayers. DaSilva said the proposed 3.5% increase equals about $127.2 million in revenue “to support the school and cityside budget.” A tax bill depends on that total and on how much taxable property there is to spread it across, which is why the two percentages differ…
