SALEM, Va. (WFXR) – Health officials in Salem have confirmed that a skunk has tested positive for rabies in the City of Salem as of Sept. 30, 2026.
The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts (RCAHD) collected the skunk near Camp North Road and North Mill Road in Salem.
Anyone with any possible human or animal contact with this skunk is encouraged to call the RCAHD Environmental Health Division or Salem Animal Control, as rabies is a deadly disease that attacks the body’s nervous system.
Health officials urge precaution on World Rabies Day
Tips to help prevent the spread of rabies:
- –AVOID contact with wild animals and domestic animals.
- -REPORT injured or threatening animals.
- -VACCINATE all of your dogs, cats, ferrets, and farm animals
- -keep their vaccinations up to date.
- –WASH the wound with soap and water. Don’t panic. Call your doctor and the local health department if you are exposed to an animal with rabies. Call your veterinarian and local animal control if your pet is exposed to an animal with rabies.
